Are you on a Mac or a PC? What files are your speaking of? What are their extensions? The WMV files are Windows files, and you may have trouble with a Mac. The .avi files need DivX, but it sounds like you took care of that.

Well, let's see if this helps:
Here's a list of codecs / media players / encoders that you'll need in order to run almost every kind of media. Do a websearch on google/kazaa on every item. I think you'll end up with something that'll solve your problem

players--
WMP 9 series
quicktime 6.5
real one player
irfanView
Flash Player 7.0

codecs--
ligos indeo codec
radius cinepak codec
MPEG2 codec (look for ELECARD codec/player, it's free)
WM DRM codecs
DivX
sorenson video codec

encoders--
TPMGenc
WMencoder
Realencoder
LogitechSDK

I think I have all that stuff installed on my computer and I almost never have any problem watching any kind of media.

Another tip: WMP and other players give you an 'error code' whent they're unable to play the file you opened; if so, try to do a websearch with that code.

FYI. Not sure why this happens but I run an old version of Navigater 4.7 (for faster internet surfing and downloading when no java or flash) and when I download clips from it I always get a codec error and I have ALL the codecs. So if I download from IE or Netscape 7.1 it doesn't happen and I find the clips are fine. So if this happens with Navigater 4.7 it may happen with other browsers or older versions.
